Part time professional skier, full time eater

Madrid, Spain!

Maybe I look back on this trip with rose colored lenses coming fresh off of a World Championship silver medal, but this trip ate (and we ate). We city cruised, relaxed, saw the sights, and drank sangria. What else could you want from a city other than widely-available sangria?

Now, Spaniards are not known for their breakfast- something I personally hold against them (who can wait until 2pm for food???), but not at Honest Greens. This place is incredible. We ordered the plant-based breakfast burrito every single day and I’m not even vegan. The overnight french toast was also a highlight; thick and gooey with a strong vanilla flavor.

We signed up to see this private flamenco dance in a tunnel with a 20 person audience, which was quite an experience. The proximity to the performers made all the difference: watching their skirts sway and watching the emotions transform their faces was mesmerizing as we listened to the rich live music echo in the chamber around us.

We hit a couple markets as well, but were quite disappointed by the San Miguel Market, one of the most popular and famous in Spain. The paella was quite dry, a bao bun barely had filling, and a slice of expensive manchego was good, but you can’t really mess up manchego. Our preference was the San Antón Market. We sampled a variety of pinchos, all deliciously crafted, crispy croquettes, and flavorful ceviche unlike any I’ve had before. No picture of San Antón, unfortunately, too busy shoving our faces.

Special mention to gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas and paella on random tapas streets as we stumbled around waiting for clubs to open (Google: how to stay up until 1 am if I have the bedtime of a 90 year old?). We also stopped everywhere, literally everywhere, for sangria and cheeseboards, and we recommend you do the same.
